Summary

In their 2010 General Election manifesto, the Conservative Party focussed on creating a ‘Big Society’ within the UK, where local communities would be empowered to instigate change within their neighbourhood, have the freedom to influence issues that matter to them and have a greater degree of social responsibility. For this to become a success, businesses have their own part to play - is it time for a new approach?

Summary

It’s amazing how people won’t even contemplate building a house without a proper design, yet they will jump into business without writing a business plan. A business plan is the architectural blueprint of your business. It tells you what you’re building, why you’re building it, where and how you’re going to build it. It also tells you what you need to strengthen the business, how much capital you need and how you will allocate your costs. More importantly, it will help you see possible snags, allowing you to address them before they become problems. Although you already know all of these, putting then on paper helps you see when you’re going off track. A number of business owners I know steer clear away from writing business plans because they think it will take too much of their time or they don’t know where to start. Writing a business plan is not difficult. You don’t need a post graduate degree in business to create one. Contrary to what other people believe, you don’t need a long business plan to make it effective. In fact, a single page business plan is just as effective as a 20 page one. If you want to have a go at preparing a plan, here’s a list of what you need to include.

Summary

There’s only one thing you as a business need to survive - paying customers. Without customers, you’ll have no business. To acquire customers, you need them to know that you exist. This is marketing. Although marketing is very important to a business, many small businesses don’t have a marketing plan. They try various marketing tools like setting up a website, sending sales e-mails and advertising, but they have no system in place to follow-up and measure the results. They try one tool once and when it fails to give the results they want, they don’t examine why. Instead they try another tool then another. So they end up with a succession of failed marketing campaigns and they conclude that marketing doesn’t work. But it does, when implemented properly.

Summary

Marketing is the lifeblood of your business - without it you won’t have customers. And without customers, you won’t have a business. Yet marketing budget is always the first to go when a business goes through a tough patch. If you’re guilty of doing this, you’re doing you’re business a lot of damage. Although marketing and advertising are always lumped together, advertising is only a small part of the marketing sphere. And there are other low costs and more effective marketing tools other than advertising.

Getting free press coverage is greatly advantageous; not only is it low cost but it’s also more effective than paid advertisement. Modern consumers are more wary of promises they read or hear on adverts. They also tend to read the news more than the ads in the paper. Since news is not paid, your business gets more credibility, too.

Summary

Although I don’t have exact figures I can quote, many believed that 90% of new businesses fail in the first 5 years. I don’t think it’s that high. I would conservatively think that at least 40% of new businesses survive more than five years. However, if you’re planning to start your own business or have just started, I’m sure that you really don’t want to be one of the over 50% who did not make it to their 6th year anniversary in business. If you want opinions on how to succeed in the tough business market, you will not be short of experts. On the other hand, if you want to give your business a DIY health check, you can ask yourself if you’ve committed these fatal errors when you started your business.
