Summary

In Ann Patchett's Bel Canto, an unnamed South American country, a world-renowned soprano sings at a birthday party in honour of a visiting Japanese industrial titan. Alas, in the opening sequence, just as the accompanist kisses the soprano, a ragtag band of 18 terrorists enters the vice-presidential mansion through the air-conditioning ducts. Their quarry is the president, who has unfortunately stayed home to watch a favourite soap opera--and thus, from the beginning, things go awry.

Route 66 is known as the “Main Street of America”, the “Mother Road” and the “Most Famous Road in the World.” It was the path of those who migrated west during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and was the vein of lifeblood supporting the small communities it passed through. A popular roadway for American holiday-goers and a legendary route immortalized in film, fiction and song, Route 66 represents the quintessential American Road Trip.

The BBC have announced a £670m cut in their budget after the cost of a TV licence was frozen for the next four years. Should the BBC really be saving costs, simply because their income from those who pay their wages and their service, is frozen? Should licence fee payers be punished because they are saving money? Protest this decision now, and once our support target is reached we will send all messages to the government.
