World Blood Donor Day 2011: 14th June Event, Course, Workshop
Summary
Donate blood and save lives. UK hospitals need 8,000 units of blood per day to meet demands. It may sound daunting, but donating blood is easy and it does not affect your health. The amount of blood taken from you when you donate is only 470 ml, which is less than a pint and this gets easily replaced by the body. Yet, only 4% of the UK population donates blood. That means 96% of the population depends on this 4% for emergency blood transfusion. To express gratitude to all blood donors and to encourage more people to consider blood donation, 14th of June, birth date of the late Karl Landsteiner is designated as World Blood Donor Day. Landsteiner was a Nobel Prize winner for his discovery of the ABO blood group system. This year’s event is hosted by Argentina and the theme is “More Blood. More Life.”

Team Green Britain Bike Week Event, Course, Workshop
Summary
Cycling is not only fun, but it is also good for your health. It’s a convenient way of getting around places (bicycles can go through where cars can’t), it’s good for the environment as bicycles don’t release harmful gas and it is the most efficient mode of transport as it uses all the energy you put into it. To promote cycling and encourage everyone to make cycling part of their everyday activities, the then Cyclist Touring Club launched “Bike Week” in 1923. The name was changed to reflect their support of Team Green Britain and its aim to reduce the UK’s carbon footprint. Team Green Britain Bike Week is happening nationwide on the 18th to 26th of June and is the UK’s biggest cycling event. Last year, approximately half a million participants cycled to support the event.

A guide to skipping Article
Summary
It’s funny how the simple things in life are often the best. The same goes for exercise. New ideas come and go like fashion, but things that withstand the tests of time always carry simple traits. Skipping or jumping rope is one of these things. Try naming another exercise that can melt so effortlessly from the bustling play ground into the hardness of a boxing gym.

Outdoor gyms - the alternative to indoor egotism Article
Summary
Have you become annoyed by your gym and the ipod shuffling, substance enhanced, mesomorphs who live there and would readily hook themselves up to a protein shake fed intravenous drip given the opportunity? Do you feel trapped by the small print of your membership contract that’s only break clause involves presenting your recently amputated leg at the reception desk? Before you condemn yourself to a life sentence of monthly direct debits, consider this alternative.

Coping with a serious diagnosis - your rights as an employee Article
Summary
Following the inevitable initial shock, there are many practicalities an individual needs to consider after you have been diagnosed with a serious long-term illness. The anxiety and devastation resulting from such a diagnosis cannot be understated, and a period of adjustment and reassessment – usually requiring time off work – is of paramount importance. Many people, particularly those whose diagnosis is not necessarily terminal or life-threatening, will want to continue as normal a lifestyle as possible and may therefore be reluctant to retreat from their everyday routine even just temporarily. However, even if you enjoy your job and do not consider it stressful, your health is always more important and the focus should remain on giving yourself the best possible chance to make a recovery.

Should you immunise your child? Article
Summary
From the very beginning of their children’s lives, parents are faced with a barrage of decisions – and some of the most important of these decisions are medical ones relating to the long-term health of their child. Over the first four or five years of life, a child is offered a total of twelve injections, including combined ‘boosters’, which protect them against no fewer than ten serious (potentially even fatal) illnesses. The overall take-up rate is thought to be in the region of 90% and doubtless many lives have been saved as a result of this free nationwide vaccination programme.
