Until very recently it was thought that Cheltenham Town Football Club was founded in 1892. However, recent evidence points to the origins being five years earlier when Mr Albert Close White returned to his native Cheltenham from college in London to take up a teaching post.

Summary

Cheltenham CS RFC, formed in 1947, offer social and competitive rugby in Cheltenham. With the advent of national leagues in 1987, they were placed in Gloucester 2. 2001-2 saw them blunder into Gloucester 3 by having 2 points deducted and coming third from bottom, but they bounced straight back again, winning all their league matches. In 2004-5 they came second with promotion to Gloucester 1. This did not go well. They would have been relegated but for a re-organisation of the leagues, and they did get relegated in 2006-7. Their response was to win the League and move back into Gloucester 1, where they are now working hard towards further promotion. The most recent development at Cheltenham Civil Service RFC has been the addition of a women’s section to the club. The women’s section was first established in the 2010/11 season, during which friendly matches were played. At the end of a very successful season the women also reached the criteria required by the RFU to enter the official RFU leagues in the 2011/12 season.
