Summary

It’s amazing how people won’t even contemplate building a house without a proper design, yet they will jump into business without writing a business plan. A business plan is the architectural blueprint of your business. It tells you what you’re building, why you’re building it, where and how you’re going to build it. It also tells you what you need to strengthen the business, how much capital you need and how you will allocate your costs. More importantly, it will help you see possible snags, allowing you to address them before they become problems. Although you already know all of these, putting then on paper helps you see when you’re going off track. A number of business owners I know steer clear away from writing business plans because they think it will take too much of their time or they don’t know where to start. Writing a business plan is not difficult. You don’t need a post graduate degree in business to create one. Contrary to what other people believe, you don’t need a long business plan to make it effective. In fact, a single page business plan is just as effective as a 20 page one. If you want to have a go at preparing a plan, here’s a list of what you need to include.

Summary

Many small businesses I know of are scared of complaints from customers and this stresses them immensely. They think that complaints reflect their business badly. I think that this is the wrong way to approach complaints. Customers are people and therefore they are prone to emotions. One day they can be as happy as Larry with you, while the next day they will find the smallest fault and complain about it. This is not a reflection on the business or the customers either. Since human nature is unpredictable, it isn’t always possible to make customers 100% happy. If you see complaints as a bad thing, you will end up walking on eggshells when dealing with clients. However, if you see it as another opportunity to show your clients how good you are, you will welcome it. (This is not saying that you shouldn’t try to offer the best product and service to your customers first time.) So, how do you turn complaints to good customer service?
